Located between Noto, Avola and Syracuse, Cavagrande is a complex of soft limestone rocks located at the lower Ibleo plateau carved by the river Cassibile, which by erosion, has shaped, over time, steep-sided valleys called “quarries”. One of the most spectacular is Cava Grande, crossed by the river Cassibile. Ten kilometers long and 250 meters deep, during the Paleolithic era, was home to villages and settlements and it is now considered the largest natural canyon in Europe, its walls, in which eight thousand tombs were carved, dates between the tenth and ninth century BC. Established by 1984 decree, boasts a dense river and lake vegetation. With its approximately three thousand hectares it is visited by many.
