The Marine Protected Area of Plemmiro, not far from Syracuse, was established in 2001 to protect the biodiversity of the stretch of sea facing the eastern part of the Maddalena peninsula.
From Castelluccio to Punta Tavernara, the seabed is low and uniform for several hundred meters, then suddenly falls deep.
Form Punta Tavernara to Capo Murro di Porco, instead the seabed exceeds 30-40 meters.
A series of underwater caves host solitary corals, sponges, sea cicadas, nudibranchs,  the largest shells in the Mediterranean, colonial corals, some large groupers and many species of fish.

The Marine Protected Area of Plemmiro has seabed rich in important archaeological sites related to the history of Syracuse

The Plemmirio area is not accessible to boats, however the areas close to the protected coast can be visited by tourist boats that are authorized to approach the coast.
