Piazza Armerina is a real attraction for archeology-loving tourists.
The town of Piazza Armerina in the province of Enna, an hour and fifteen minutes’ drive from Catania, can be reached through some of the most beautiful rural landscapes. It is the place of Villa Romana del Casale, built in the fourth century AD by a Roman noble family, and still in excellent condition. The villa is one of the most important archeological sites in Sicily, because of its 3500 square meters of mosaics covering the floors and the beautiful frescoed walls. A careful restoration job has brought to light a perfect mosaic with everyday life scenes, hunting, and above all, the famous women in bikinis (actually they were gymnasts), defined by contemporary art historians, the oldest evidence of past modernity.
